Lyderhorn

Lyderhorn is the westernmost of Bergen's seven mountains and rises to 396 meters above the city. From its summit, visitors have wide views across the fjords and open ocean that surround the area.

Kvarven Fort, a military installation near the mountain, was built in 1899 and served as a defensive position for Bergen until 1961. The location played an important role in the city's coastal defense during conflicts of the 20th century.

The summit has served as a gathering place for festive occasions during Norwegian celebrations like Midsummer and Yuletide, when locals traditionally light fires and celebrate together. These customs have made it a meaningful location in the community's social calendar and heritage.

The hike starts in Gravdal and follows a 3.6 kilometer trail to the summit. The trailhead is accessible by bus 6 via Lyderhornsveien or bus 44 to the Gravdal bus stop.

The summit serves as the starting point for Bergen Turlag's annual mountain race and contains remnants of old torpedo batteries. These military artifacts offer a quiet reminder of the location's strategic importance in the past.
