Askøy Bridge, Suspension bridge in Bergen, Norway.
The Askøy Bridge is a steel suspension bridge crossing Byfjorden to link Bergen with Askøy. Two vehicle lanes run alongside separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists across the roughly 1,000-meter span, which is held up by two massive concrete towers.
Construction started in 1989 and the bridge opened in 1992, eliminating the need for the ferry service that once connected the two areas. This project represented a major shift in how the region accessed Bergen.
The bridge design by architect Knut Selberg integrates Norwegian engineering traditions with modern transportation requirements through the fjord landscape.
The bridge is open daily to all traffic and serves drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists with separate paths. Wind and visibility can be challenging during poor weather, so travelers should exercise caution.
The main cables expand and contract with extreme temperature shifts, managed by a sophisticated suspension system. This engineering detail keeps the structure stable across changing seasons.
