Bømla Bridge, Suspension bridge in Hordaland, Norway.
Bømla Bridge is a suspension structure spanning 998 meters across Spissøysundet, linking Nautøy in Stord Municipality with Spissøy in Bømlo Municipality via County Road 542. The roadway has two traffic lanes plus a separate path for walkers and cyclists, with adequate clearance below for ships to navigate through.
Construction began in 1999 and marked a significant infrastructure project for the region that changed connections between the two municipalities. The work represented a major engineering achievement that required new technical methods to span such a long distance across the water.
The bridge replaced traditional ferry connections and shapes how residents travel between the two municipalities in their daily routines. Today it functions as an ordinary part of everyday life for people commuting between Stord and Bømlo.
The bridge is open to both car and bicycle traffic with a walkway on one side for pedestrians going on foot. Visitors can easily cross on foot or by bike while taking in views across the water during their journey.
During construction, an innovative cable-making process was used for the first time in the country, creating the thick steel cables that support the span. This technical breakthrough made the project a milestone for future bridge building in the region.
