Stord Bridge, Suspension bridge in Vestland, Norway.
The Stord Bridge is a road and cycling structure in Vestland that spans the Digernessundet strait for approximately 1,100 meters. The construction links the islands of Stord and Føyno with two traffic lanes and a separate section for pedestrians and cyclists.
Construction of the structure was finished in 2000 and marked a technological milestone in Norway. It was the first time in the country that bridge cables were produced directly at the building site.
The bridge name changed from Stordbrua to Stordabrua following consultations with local municipalities to reflect regional linguistic preferences.
The structure carries European Route E39 and is free to cross. The passage is straightforward to navigate on foot or by bicycle and provides quick access between the two islands.
The concrete towers of this structure rise to about 100 meters and were built using substantial amounts of steel and concrete. This made the project a notable engineering accomplishment of its era.
