Gudvanga Tunnel, Road tunnel in Aurland Municipality, Norway
Gudvanga Tunnel is a road tunnel in Norway that stretches 11.4 kilometers through the mountains, connecting the village of Gudvangen with the Undredalen valley. It forms part of European Route E16 and provides a direct passage through the rock.
The tunnel opened in 1991 and replaced older mountain roads that had made travel through the region difficult. This connection greatly improved access between the fjord regions and inland areas.
The tunnel construction demonstrates Norwegian engineering methods in managing transportation through fjord landscapes while maintaining the natural mountain environment.
The tunnel is open year-round and offers a safe route regardless of weather conditions. The passage is level and well-lit, making driving through straightforward.
About seven kilometers beyond the eastern exit, three more tunnels follow, forming a continuous tunnel system roughly 43 kilometers long. This underground road network is among the longest in Scandinavia.
