Prinds Christian Augusts Minde, Heritage site and former hospital in downtown Oslo, Norway
Prinds Christian Augusts Minde is a building complex at Storgata 36 with multiple structures from different periods. The layout shows how rooms were arranged for living, working, and care.
The site started as a holiday residence in 1670 and became a welfare institution in 1809. After this change it served for over a century as a hospital for poor residents of Oslo.
The buildings show how social care changed over time in Norway and what kind of help poor people received. You can see today how different areas were used for different purposes.
The site is in central Oslo and easy to reach by public transport. The preservation group Prindsens Venner manages archives if you want to learn more about the history.
Inside the building was an early spinning factory where poor residents made textiles in the early 1800s. This combined work with daily care, showing a practical approach to help from that era.
