Oslo Nye Teater, Theatre company in Oslo, Norway.
Oslo Nye Teater is a theatre complex at Rosenkrantz' gate 10 in central Oslo, housing four separate stages of different sizes under one roof. The building sits close to many city centre landmarks and is recognizable from the outside by its late 1920s facade.
The company was formed in 1959 when Det Nye Teater and Folketeatret merged and moved into a building that architects Blakstad and Dunker had completed in 1929. In the 1990s the building was thoroughly renovated to bring it up to the needs of a modern theatre operation.
Oslo Nye Teater performs in Norwegian and draws a wide audience, from school groups to regular theatergoers. The four stages run at the same time, so on any given evening you might find a small intimate show in one room and a large production in another.
All four stages are inside the same building, so it is easy to get your bearings once you arrive and to move between events if needed. The central location means the theatre is within walking distance of most city centre hotels and public transport stops.
The 1990s renovation was led by architects Kristin Jarmund and Ola Helle, two names who were still early in their careers at the time. The project helped establish their reputation in Norway.
