Stortings plass

Stortings plass is a granite-paved square located at Karl Johans gate directly across from the Norwegian Parliament building. Three prominent buildings frame the space, with a bronze statue of painter Christian Krohg positioned at its center.

The square was created between 1841 and 1843 as part of Karl Johans gate's development, replacing two large building blocks that were previously separated by a narrow alley called Krøllen. This transformation was part of Oslo's expanding urban growth during the 1800s.

The bronze statue of painter Christian Krohg anchors the square and honors an artist who maintained a studio nearby. Visitors walking through notice how this memorial invites people to pause and reflect on Oslo's connection to its artistic past.

The square is easy to access and connects to Lille Grensen and Arbeidergata streets, making it a key junction in the city center. A restaurant with outdoor seating operates during the summer months if you want to sit and rest while exploring the area.

The square earned the nickname Dasslokket from an underground public toilet facility that once operated beneath it. This hidden infrastructure has long since disappeared, but the old name remains a curious reminder of a peculiar chapter in Oslo's urban history.
