Lillehammer Art Museum, Art museum and civic building in Lillehammer, Norway
The Lillehammer Art Museum is an art museum and civic building in Lillehammer housed in two connected structures. It holds roughly 1800 works spanning from 19th century paintings through contemporary pieces.
The museum was founded in 1921 when merchant Einar Lunde donated his collection to the city. Major donations by Oscar Johannesen in 1958 and Jon Dobloug in 2008 significantly expanded what could be shown.
The collection features works by Norwegian artists like Johan Christian Dahl and Edvard Munch alongside international creators. The works on display show how painters from different countries and periods connected with and influenced each other.
The museum occupies two connected buildings that flow together easily and are straightforward to navigate. Plan time to move through both sections and explore the different levels at a comfortable pace.
The newer building was designed by the renowned architecture firm Snøhetta and served as a cultural center during the 1994 Winter Olympics. Those modern spaces reflect Lillehammer's brief time as a host city and the mark that event left on the place.
