Filefjell Kongevegen, Historic mountain trail in Filefjell, Norway
Filefjell Kongevegen is a historic mountain trail that connects the eastern Valdres region to the western Sognefjord area. The path runs through varied landscapes and largely follows the original route established centuries ago.
The road across Filefjell was completed in 1793 and became the first practical connection between Oslo and Bergen suitable for horses and carts. This new route significantly changed trade and communication between the two regions.
The trail passes traditional Norwegian guest houses like Maristova, which has hosted travelers crossing the mountain pass for centuries. These buildings show how important this passage was for people living on both sides of the mountain.
The trail is easiest to walk from May through October, with the complete journey taking between three and six days. Prepare for changing weather and bring proper footwear and gear suitable for different conditions.
Many sections of the original road are supported by dry stone walls built entirely by hand with simple tools. This handmade construction shows the hard labor required to make this mountain pass passable.
