Utladalen Landscape Protection Area

Utladalen is a protected landscape with deep valleys, mountain peaks over 2,000 meters, and four bridges crossing the Utla river. The system covers approximately 300 square kilometers and connects multiple river sources through an intricate network of valleys and ridges.

The area was designated as a protected landscape by Norway's nature authority in 1980 and sits adjacent to Jotunheimen National Park. This designation was part of a broader effort to safeguard Norway's mountain regions under official protection.

The walking path through this valley was built by volunteers dedicated to preserving natural spaces for future generations. The route still reflects this community commitment, with its carefully maintained sections and bridges that blend into the landscape.

The walking path starts in the village of Øvre Årdal and leads through the valley with access to Vettisfossen waterfall. Visitors should be prepared for changing mountain weather conditions and bring sturdy footwear and rain gear.

This valley is Norway's deepest gorge and home to Vettisfossen, the country's largest unregulated waterfall. The waterfall drops over 275 meters and remains free-flowing, making it a rare sight in Europe.
