Fannaråki, Mountain summit in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway
Fannaråki is a mountain summit in Jotunheimen National Park in Norway, with steep walls on its southern side. The northern face drops more gently toward the Fanaråkbreen glacier below.
The name comes from two Old Norse words: 'fonn', meaning snow glacier, and 'råk', referring to a mountain ridge. Together they describe the two defining natural features that give the peak its character.
The summit is a classic goal for Norwegian mountaineers, and the Fannaråkhytta hut serves as a natural meeting point on the way up. Hikers there share routes and experiences, continuing a long tradition of alpine activity in these highlands.
The route to the top follows a marked trail starting from Sognefjellshytta lodge, rated as moderate in difficulty. The Fannaråkhytta mountain hut along the way offers shelter and overnight accommodation for those exploring the area.
A meteorological station sits at the summit and has been recording data for many decades, making it one of the longest-running weather observation points in the Norwegian high alpine zone. This continuity makes the site a valuable reference for climate researchers.
