Storebjørn, Mountain summit in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway.

Storebjørn is a mountain summit in Jotunheimen National Park with an elevation of 2,222 meters, part of the Smørstabbtindene range in Innlandet county. The peak displays several glaciers on its slopes and stands out as a prominent formation in the alpine landscape.

The first recorded ascent took place on August 14, 1884, when climbers Carl Christian Hall and Mathias Soggemoen reached the summit. This early climbing achievement reflected the growing mountain exploration culture of late 19th century Europe.

The name Storebjørn means 'Big Bear' in Norwegian and follows an old tradition of naming mountains after animals in Scandinavian culture. This custom still shapes how people speak about the surrounding landscape today.

The peak is accessible from the village of Fossbergom, located roughly 40 kilometers to the northeast, via established routes for experienced mountaineers. Visitors should prepare for alpine conditions and plan timing around seasonal weather patterns.

The mountain has a prominence of 804 meters and an isolation distance of 8.7 kilometers, which distinguishes it from neighboring peaks in unusual ways. These measurements reveal how independently this summit stands within the broader range.
