Store Austanbottstind, Mountain summit in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway
Store Austanbottstind is a 2,203 meter (7,228 foot) mountain peak and the highest summit in the western section of the Hurrungane range. The peak is surrounded by other prominent mountains that shape the overall character of this alpine landscape.
The first documented climb was in 1883 when mountaineers Carl Hall and Mathias Sognemoen reached the summit during an expedition. This early exploration contributed to mapping and understanding the Hurrungane region.
The mountain's name comes from Norwegian: 'austan' means eastern, 'botn' refers to a valley bottom, and 'tind' means peak. This naming shows how people in the region describe and understand their landscape.
The route requires mountaineering experience and proper equipment, especially when crossing an exposed snow flank. Visitors should plan for stable conditions and good weather to reach the summit safely.
The mountain rises about 450 meters above its immediate surroundings and is therefore clearly visible from many viewpoints in the region. This elevation prominence makes it an important reference point for hikers navigating the Hurrungane range.
