Borgestad church, Heritage church in Skien, Norway.
Borgestad Church is a stone church in Skien featuring white walls and an asymmetrically positioned bell tower. The building draws architectural inspiration from English country churches and accommodates approximately 380 worshippers.
Construction began in 1903 with funding from Prime Minister Gunnar Knudsen and finished in 1906. The building was formally consecrated on May 24, 1907.
The stained glass windows created by Emanuel Vigeland between 1918 and 1919 showcase detailed artistic craftsmanship. These works, along with the interior paintings by Ulrik Hendriksen from 1921, form the visual heart of the space.
The church is within walking distance from the town center and offers a quiet place to visit. For a full appreciation of the interior details, especially the stained glass, visiting during daytime hours works best.
This location carries centuries of religious life, with historical records pointing to an earlier church on the same site dating back to at least 1398. The building thus represents generations of worship and community gathering at a single place.
