Osterøy Bridge, Suspension bridge in Vestland, Norway
Osterøy Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure spanning the Sørfjorden, connecting the island of Osterøy to the mainland near Bergen. The crossing stretches for 595 meters using eight structural sections, with a clearance of 53 meters above the water surface and no support pillars placed in the water itself.
The project developed from the need to improve connections between the isolated island and the mainland. It was completed and opened in 1997, marking a significant step forward in regional transportation links.
The bridge links an island community with the broader region, making daily travel between Osterøy and the mainland much simpler for residents. Today it is simply part of how people move around in this area.
The bridge is part of Norwegian County Road 566 and provides direct road access between Osterøy and the mainland. The crossing is straightforward to navigate and offers clear views across the fjord from either direction.
The bridge took many years of planning before construction actually began on the site. The engineering was carefully adapted to handle the specific wind conditions of this fjord region, making it a tailored solution for the local environment.
