Dr. Holms Hotel, Hotel in Norwegen
Dr. Holms Hotel is a mountain resort in Hol Municipality in Geilo, Southern Norway. The building offers more than 80 rooms in various styles and configurations, a restaurant with seasonal menus, a spa area with an indoor pool and saunas, a sports bar with screens for viewing, and multiple conference spaces that can accommodate up to 300 people.
The hotel was founded in 1909 by Doctor Ingebrikt Christian Holm, who established it as a sanatorium for respiratory diseases using mountain air for patient recovery. After World War II and turbulent decades under various owners, including management crises in the 1970s, the hotel was acquired by a Norwegian company in 1979 and later extensively renovated under new management that brought it to its current form.
The hotel is named after its founder, Doctor Ingebrikt Christian Holm, who established it in 1909 as a health retreat for respiratory patients. Visitors experience it as a place where Norwegian mountain culture remains present, with local wood details, fireplaces, and a rhythm of life centered on winter sports and outdoor activities.
The hotel is within walking distance of Geilo train station and is easily reached by train from Oslo or Bergen. Ski slopes are immediately nearby, skis can be rented at the hotel, and many hiking trails start close by, making outdoor activities accessible right after arrival.
The hotel is recognized as a pioneer of Norwegian hotel chains, belonging in its early years to a company that operated other hotels across the country. The property hosted famous guests like Knut Hamsun and Sonja Henie, which added prestige and established it as a meeting place for Norway's social elite during the early and mid-twentieth century.
