Oselvar, Offshore oil and gas field in North Sea, Norway
Oselvar is an offshore oil and gas field in the North Sea located roughly 250 kilometers southwest of Stavanger at a water depth of 70 meters. Production comes from three horizontal wells that connect to nearby infrastructure for processing and shipping the extracted resources.
The field was discovered in 1991 and received development approval in 2009, with production starting in 2012. Development of this North Sea resource required years of planning to address the technical demands of offshore operations.
The field represents Norway's industrial advancement in North Sea petroleum extraction, contributing to the nation's economic development through marine resources.
The shallow water depth makes operations more manageable compared to deeper North Sea fields, though the environment remains harsh with strong currents and unpredictable weather. Access is restricted to authorized personnel as this is an active production site with strict safety protocols.
The reservoir holds both oil and gas within Paleocene sandstone formations between 2900 and 3250 meters below the seafloor. This depth allows extraction of both resources from the same geological layer.
