Hovedbygningen, Heritage university building in Gløshaugen, Norway
Hovedbygningen is the main building of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, featuring granite panels with technical symbols at its entrance that represent engineering and architectural disciplines. The structure houses auditoriums, meeting rooms, a technology library, and administrative offices located within the Gløshaugen campus.
The building was constructed between 1906 and 1910 as the first structure of the Norwegian Institute of Technology. Its southern wing was completed in 1915, expanding the original facility to serve the growing institution.
The structure incorporates medieval architectural references from Nidaros Cathedral into its exterior and interior vaulted halls. These design choices reflect how the building bridges historical Norwegian traditions with its modern institutional purpose.
The building sits on the Gløshaugen campus, about 2 kilometers from downtown Trondheim. The campus is accessible and easy to navigate on foot, making the main building straightforward to find and explore.
The interior is decorated with iron work details and mural paintings by Enevold Thømt that blend artistic traditions with the building's technical purpose. These works represent a rare combination of craftsmanship and modern institutional design.
