Hydnefossen, Cascading waterfall in Hemsedal Municipality, Norway
Hydnefossen is a waterfall with a total height of around 475 meters that extends beneath the Veslehorn mountain. The water cascades down in several stages, creating an impressive sight of rushing water and spray.
The waterfall was systematically documented and studied only in the early 21st century. This later attention to the site shows how exploration of remote mountain regions often begins quite late.
Ice climbers from the region use the frozen waterfall during winter months to practice their skills. This seasonal activity has made the site a gathering place for people who enjoy winter mountain sports.
You can reach the waterfall from Highway Rv52, which passes south of Hemsedal town. There are several pull-offs and parking spots available along the route to visit this site.
The water changes its appearance and behavior dramatically depending on the season. In spring it flows powerfully downward, while in winter it freezes solid and offers climbers a completely different challenge.
