The Seamen’s Memorial Hall, Maritime memorial and museum in Tjøme, Norway

The Seamen's Memorial Hall is a pyramid-shaped building in Tjøme that serves as both a memorial site and museum. It houses 32 copper plates bearing the names of 7,562 sailors who died during their maritime service, along with collections of maritime artifacts and personal belongings from different naval periods.

The building was inaugurated in 1926 by King Haakon VII to honor Norwegian sailors who died during World War I. It was later expanded to commemorate victims of World War II, reflecting how the memorial evolved to serve changing remembrance needs.

The interior features a frieze by sculptor Nic Schiøll showing maritime life, paired with a poetic text by Herman Wildenwey honoring seafarers. These works shape the atmosphere of the memorial space and reflect Norway's deep connection to the sea.

The site is located on a peninsula and remains accessible throughout the year, though winter months see fewer visitors. Plan time to read through the name lists and examine the artifact collections to fully appreciate the scope of what is preserved.

At the center of the space stands a ceremonial sarcophagus beneath the sculpture "Toward the Depth", serving as a focal point of remembrance. This symbolic centerpiece draws visitors in immediately upon entering the interior.
