Sukkerhuset, Heritage site in Kalvskinnet, Trondheim, Norway
Sukkerhuset is a three-story building in the Kalvskinnet neighborhood with a symmetrical facade facing Erling Skakkes gate and displaying baroque and rococo architectural features. The structure preserves details from these historical design periods in its outer appearance.
The building was constructed in 1754 and initially functioned as a sugar refinery processing raw sugar from the Caribbean. After 1856 the E.C. Dahls Brewery operated from this location until 1984.
Today students from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology gather here for social events and concerts held in the basement venue. The building has become an active meeting place for the academic community.
The building houses a student-run pub open Thursday evenings from 18:00 and Friday evenings from 19:00 with various entertainment options. Visitors should note that activities like quizzes, karaoke, and live music happen mainly on these weekdays.
The building is among Norway's oldest preserved factory structures, showing how colonial trade and local industry shaped Trondheim's development. This dual history as a sugar refinery and later brewery reflects the economic shifts that affected the region.
