Margarinfabrikken, Heritage site in Bjølsen, Norway.
Margarinfabrikken is a five-story industrial building with narrow vertical openings running across its facade and rounded arch windows on the ground floor. A distinctive tower with a dome crowns the top floor, giving the structure its recognizable silhouette.
The Norwegian Cooperative Society purchased the margarine factory in 1911 and constructed the present building between 1926 and 1927. This construction represented a significant industrial development for the city during that period.
Architect Thorvald Astrup designed the structure to reflect industrial strength through its solid construction and distinctive architectural elements. Today it stands as a reminder of how factories once shaped neighborhoods through their bold physical presence.
The building is located at Stavangergaten 42 and currently serves as Norway's largest kindergarten with space for about 390 children across multiple areas. It is easily accessible on foot and well connected to public transport in the neighborhood.
The building was placed on Oslo's heritage yellow list, a designation that protects structures of architectural and historical value. This status ensures the preservation of this industrial landmark as a reference point for understanding the city's manufacturing past.
