Lake Alta, Glacial cirque lake at The Remarkables, New Zealand

Lake Alta rests at an elevation of 1800 meters, surrounded by steep mountain slopes in the Queenstown-Lakes District of New Zealand's South Island.

The lake formed through natural glacial erosion processes, creating a deep basin within the mountain range during the last ice age period.

The lake location served as a filming site for the Dimrill Dale scene in The Lord of the Rings movies, where characters exit the Mines of Moria.

The Lake Alta Track begins at The Remarkables Ski Area Lodge and takes approximately 90 minutes to complete the 2.4-kilometer return journey.

During winter months from May to November, the entire lake area transforms under deep snow, requiring specialized equipment for safe navigation.

Location: Queenstown-Lakes District

Elevation above the sea: 1,800 m

GPS coordinates: -45.06411,168.80987
