Majlis al Jinn, Limestone cave in Muscat Governorate, Oman
Majlis al Jinn is a limestone cave in Muscat Governorate, Oman. The main chamber stretches 310 meters in length and 225 meters in width, while three natural openings in the ceiling let daylight into the interior.
Don Davison made the first descent in 1983 while working on a geological survey for water resources. His discovery led to the first documentation and later opened the site for research purposes.
Locals call it Council of Spirits because stories about invisible inhabitants inside have been told for generations. Visitors often hear the echo of their own voices bouncing off the walls during the descent, which adds to the sense of mystery.
Reaching the site requires a demanding hike of 1,300 meters (about 4,265 feet) across rocky terrain and a vertical rappel of 120 meters (about 394 feet). Visitors must be skilled in rope techniques and should start early in the day to allow enough time for the round trip.
The chamber holds a volume of 4 million cubic meters and could theoretically fit twelve Boeing 747 aircraft or 1,600 tourist buses. Researchers have found that the acoustics inside amplify every sound and let it reverberate for several seconds.
