Sultan Kudarat, Province in Soccsksargen region, Philippines
Sultan Kudarat is a province in the Soccsksargen region on Mindanao island, made up of twelve municipalities with a southern coastline along the Celebes Sea. The landscape ranges from coastal lowlands with rivers and rice fields to forested hills and mountain ranges in the north that mark the boundary with neighboring provinces.
The province was created in November 1973 and named after a 17th-century sultan who organized military resistance against colonial expansion. Its territory was carved from parts of Cotabato to form a new administrative unit with its own government and boundaries.
Coastal towns combine fishing with crop growing, while inland communities rely on rice paddies and coconut groves for their daily work. Tacurong and other towns show a mix of groups at markets and religious celebrations that follow both Christian and Muslim traditions.
Travel within the province works best using main roads that connect the municipalities, though some mountain routes can become difficult during heavy rains. Visitors heading to coastal areas find better conditions during the dry season when roads and ferries run without interruption.
Lake Buluan extends across municipal borders and brings two thirds of its total surface into this territory, creating wetlands and fishing grounds important to the local economy. Some inland river sections are still used for transporting goods between remote settlements not reached by paved roads.
