Cabalian Volcano, Stratovolcano in Southern Leyte, Philippines.
Cabalian Volcano is a stratovolcano located in the southern part of Leyte island, rising to approximately 945 meters in height with distinct volcanic features. At its summit sits a crater lake roughly 500 meters across, positioned at an elevation of 733 meters.
The mountain formed as part of the volcanic arc system that shapes the region's geology. Scientific studies of ancient ash deposits indicate the volcano's most recent significant eruption occurred around 1820.
The volcano shapes daily life in nearby villages through its natural hot springs, which communities have relied on for centuries. Local traditions and practices have developed around these geothermal features found on the mountain's slopes.
The mountain is best accessed through San Juan municipality on the southwestern side, where hiking groups typically begin their ascent. Plan for a demanding climb in changing weather conditions and bring suitable footwear and protective clothing for the trek.
Active steam vents and thermal springs dot both the eastern and western slopes, with Mainit Hot Spring reaching temperatures of 63 degrees Celsius (145 degrees Fahrenheit). These geothermal features reveal the volcano remains geologically active and continues releasing heat from beneath the surface.
