Rizal Park, Urban park in Ermita, Manila, Philippines.
Rizal Park is a public park in Ermita in Manila that spreads across a large open lawn with tended beds, shallow water basins, and paved paths between tall trees. Several monuments and sculptures stand along the main walkways and mark central gathering spaces throughout the grounds.
Spanish colonial authorities executed José Rizal at this location on December 30, 1896, making the site a place of national memory. The American colonial administration then began transforming the area into a public park in the early 1900s.
People gather in the early morning or late afternoon for walks and light exercise along the wide paths. Families come on weekends to picnic on the grass or watch street musicians and artists near the gardens.
Visitors can pick up maps showing more than forty spots at the visitor center and inquire about guided walks there. The paths are paved and wide enough for wheelchairs, and shaded areas under trees offer breaks during hot weather.
The central lagoon presents an evening water show with music and colored light accompanied by bright sculptures along the shoreline. Many visitors come especially for this short performance that begins after sunset.
