Ormoc, Administrative center in western Leyte, Philippines
Ormoc is an administrative center in western Leyte province in the Philippines, spreading across a flat plain at the head of the bay bearing its name. The center connects to the Camotes Sea and sits within a farming region in the eastern Visayas.
After World War II the center rebuilt from rubble following liberation by U.S. forces from Japanese control in December 1944. Those postwar years brought sweeping change in the structure and development of the settlement.
The name comes from ogmok, an old Visayan term for lowland plain, describing its position along the bay. Sugarcane fields still shape the countryside around this center and recall its agricultural roots.
The center sits on the coast and connects by road to other parts of Leyte, making it a transit point for travelers. Those exploring the area will find access to both rural districts and the shoreline of the bay.
The Tongonan Hot Spring National Park nearby contains geothermal springs that generate electricity for much of the surrounding region. These power plants make the area an example of renewable energy production in the Philippines.
