Palacio del Gobernador, Government building in Intramuros, Philippines
The Palacio del Gobernador is a nine-story administrative building positioned southwest of Plaza de Roma in the walled city. It houses several government offices including the Commission on Elections and the Intramuros Administration.
The original structure on this site served as the residence of Spanish governors until an earthquake destroyed it in 1863. Following this disaster, the governors moved their official residence to the nearby Malacañang Palace.
The building's name reflects its role as a seat of colonial governance and administrative power. Today it stands as a symbol of how Manila's government structures evolved from Spanish times into the modern era.
The building is accessible on weekdays and sits on a well-served street with nearby transportation options. Visitors should arrive during business hours and expect that official activities may limit access to certain areas.
The current building was designed in 1976 by architect Otilio Arellano, replacing an earlier structure on the same site. It demonstrates how Manila built new administrative structures within its historic districts.
