Bakhawan Eco-Park, Mangrove conservation park in Kalibo, Philippines.
Bakhawan Eco-Park is a protected mangrove forest along the coast of Kalibo with extensive wooded areas. A built-out bamboo boardwalk stretches through the dense forest and winds alongside the water for about 1.3 kilometers.
The area was developed in the 1990s as a flood and storm protection measure for the New Buswang district. Local organizations started a reforestation effort to safeguard the coastal community.
The local name Bakhawan comes from the regional dialect and means mangrove, showing the deep connection between the community and these coastal forests. You can see how people value and interact with this landscape as you walk through.
The park opens daily and is best visited in clear weather when the bamboo boardwalk is dry and safe to walk on. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as there is limited shade along most of the walkway.
The park is home to tamilok, mollusks that live in mangrove wood, and they are traditionally eaten by local people. This creature reveals how people and nature coexist in this environment.
