MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park, National Historical Landmark in Palo, Philippines
MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park is a coastal park in Palo on Leyte with seven larger-than-life bronze figures. The statues stand in a water basin near Red Beach and show General MacArthur with six other people during the landing.
On October 20, 1944, General MacArthur landed on this stretch of coast, fulfilling his return to the Philippines. The liberation of the archipelago began with this landing on Leyte.
The bronze sculptures stand in a shallow basin that recreates the landing conditions. The depiction shows MacArthur with sunglasses and corncob pipe, wading through the water with his companions.
The park is located about five kilometers south of Tacloban on the Red Beach coast. A small museum displays photographs and personal items from the period.
The sculptor Anastacio Caedo created the sculptures at double life size. They reconstruct the scene from Gaetano Faillace's photograph, which became one of the most famous war images.
