Gwadar Port, Deep water port in Gwadar, Pakistan
Gwadar Port is a deep water port on the Arabian Sea coast in the city of Gwadar, southwestern Pakistan, receiving container and cargo ships from around the world. The facilities include several berths along the bay and large storage areas for imported and exported goods.
The territory was purchased from Oman by Pakistan in 1958 and remained a small fishing harbour for decades. Construction of the modern port began in the early 2000s with international support and expanded in several phases.
The harbour is changing the rhythm of life for coastal fishing families in Balochistan, as work shifts toward logistics and shipping. The traditional fishing villages nearby are adjusting to the growing trade economy that now shapes the waterfront.
The port lies on the western edge of town and is visible from the residential neighbourhoods, with access to the facilities usually restricted to cargo and port staff. Visitors can view the outer areas and surrounding roads to get a sense of the operations.
The harbour shortens the sea route between China and the Middle East considerably, as ships no longer need to pass through the Strait of Malacca. This alternative route saves several thousand kilometres and multiple days of travel time for cargo vessels.
