Legions of Marshal Józef Piłsudski Bridge, Steel road-rail bridge in Płock, Poland
The Legions of Marshal Józef Piłsudski Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Vistula River, connecting Płock's Old Town with the Radziwie district. The bridge consists of nine spans supported by eight concrete piers, measuring approximately 690 meters in total length.
Construction began in 1936 and was completed in December 1938, making it the longest bridge in Poland at that time. The project fulfilled growing transportation needs between the two banks of the Vistula and became vital for Płock.
The bridge is named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski and his legions, honoring their role in defending Poland during the Polish-Soviet War. This name serves as a local symbol of national history and the struggles of that era.
The bridge carries two lanes for vehicles, one railway track, and separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists, linking important parts of the city. Visitors should expect traffic during peak hours, especially since it serves as a main crossing.
The structure was specially designed to overcome the technical challenges posed by the high escarpment on the Vistula's right bank. This engineering solution allowed a crossing to be built across otherwise difficult terrain.
