Łobżenica, Medieval town in Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland
Łobżenica is a small town in Piła County, in the Greater Poland region, and serves as the administrative center for the surrounding rural gmina. The town sits in a flat area and offers basic services for both residents and visitors passing through.
The town received city rights before 1438 and grew into a trading point on the route between Gdansk Pomerania and central Poland. Its position along this corridor helped it attract merchants from near and far.
Scottish merchants settled here from 1606 onward and brought trading habits that shaped local commerce for a long time. Their presence made this small town an unusually cosmopolitan place for its size and location.
The town center is easy to walk through, with most facilities close together and streets that are straightforward to navigate. A visit here can be combined with a trip into the surrounding countryside of the gmina.
Between 1612 and 1630, the town ran its own mint and produced coins for the Kingdom of Poland. Running a mint was a privilege granted only to places of real economic weight, which says a great deal about what this town had become by then.
