Bishopric of Pomesania, Catholic diocese in northern Pomesania region, Poland

The Bishopric of Pomesania was an ecclesiastical territory in northern Prussia that stretched between the Osa and Wisła rivers and encompassed much of the Żuławy region. Kwidzyn served as the bishop's city and administered a total of 235 parishes organized into 16 deaneries.

William of Modena founded the bishopric on July 28, 1243 as one of four Roman Catholic dioceses in Prussia with confirmation from Pope Innocent IV. Its creation was part of the Church's effort to organize the religious structure of Prussia during the early stages of Christianization.

The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Kwidzyn served as the spiritual center of the region and drew believers from surrounding areas. The building shaped the city's character and remained the most important site for religious ceremonies and gatherings over many centuries.

Visiting the Cathedral in Kwidzyn offers a good starting point to understand the bishopric and its religious importance. The city is easily accessible and allows exploration of the surviving buildings and the former administrative center.

The tomb of Dorothy of Montowów in the cathedral drew pilgrims across generations and was visited by leading rulers of the region. This saint's veneration was so significant that it spread the bishopric's reputation far beyond its borders.
