Brzeg, Administrative center in Opole Voivodeship, Poland
Brzeg is a municipality with town status in Opole Voivodeship and sits on the left bank of the Oder. The built area spreads across flat terrain, and several streets lead from the riverside toward the older core.
The settlement began in the 13th century as a trading place and received town rights based on Magdeburg law in 1248. Over the following decades the place was fortified and grew into a regional center in Silesia.
The name comes from the Polish word for shore and points to the riverside location. Visitors notice today the mix of Central European building styles that appear in facades and street patterns throughout the center.
Railway connections run regularly in both directions and bring travelers to Wrocław or Opole. The main station sits near the center and can be reached on foot or by local buses.
The Latin designation Civitas Altae Ripae means city of the high shore and describes the raised position above the river course. This name form appears in old charters and maps from the Middle Ages.
