Brzeg Castle, Renaissance castle in Brzeg, Poland

Brzeg Castle is a Renaissance fortress that rises from a cliff overlooking the Oder River, its architecture reflecting the power of its former rulers. The complex features three-story galleries within a courtyard and an ornate gatehouse decorated with stone portraits of Piast dynasty leaders.

The fortress was built in 1235 under Henry I the Bearded and became the seat of the Piast rulers for hundreds of years. When their rule ended in the 17th century, the castle lost its role as a royal residence.

The castle houses a museum dedicated to the Silesian Piast rulers, showing how this family shaped the region's history through their leadership. The exhibitions reveal the customs and power structures of the medieval nobility who once lived here.

The courtyard is open for free exploration and gives a good overview of the entire complex, while guided tours and museum tickets provide access to interior spaces. Wear comfortable shoes since pathways across the grounds are uneven and include stairs.

The castle preserves a rare hunting bow from the 14th century, one of its most valuable pieces on display. This weapon reveals the hunting traditions of the nobility and showcases the craftsmanship of medieval weapon makers.
