Biłgoraj, Urban municipality in southeastern Lublin Voivodeship, Poland
Biłgoraj is an urban municipality in southeastern Lublin Voivodeship, set in the northern Sandomierz Basin and surrounded by extensive woodland and crossed by several watercourses. The settlement spreads over flat terrain marked by pine forest and farmland.
Adam Gorajski founded the settlement in 1570 on his family estate before King Stefan Batory granted it official town rights on September 10, 1578, in Lviv. This elevation marked the start of a local trading place on the eastern fringe of the Polish Crown.
The town still displays elements of its folk art in workshops and local exhibitions that keep sieve-making and rural crafts alive. Visitors can trace how regional identity was preserved through manual trades and inherited techniques across generations.
Two regional roads cross the area and link it to larger centers in the region, while the local railway station sits on a less traveled secondary line. Travelers find lodging and meals in the town center, where most services are also located.
Until the 19th century, local brewers produced a green beer known in the surrounding area as a regional specialty. Today, the municipality hosts the headquarters of a major Polish furniture maker that gained recognition beyond the region under the name Black Red White.
