National road 1, National trunk road in Poland
National Road 1 is a major route connecting Gdańsk on the Baltic coast with the borders to Czech Republic and Slovakia. It runs through several regions of Poland and operates as a modern motorway in many sections.
The road developed in the early 20th century as an important link and was extensively renewed after World War II. Large sections were later rebuilt into the modern A1 motorway.
The road connects coastal regions with industrial centers and farming areas, showing Poland's varied landscapes. Towns along the route differ noticeably in character, reflecting regional differences across the country.
The route has many rest stops and restaurants, making it easy to break up the journey. Some sections get heavily used, especially during peak times, so patience while driving is important.
Since completion of the A1 motorway, parts of the original route were redesignated as Road 91. Following these newer sections of the former path allows travelers to explore the old road network.
