Polesie National Park, National park near Chełm, Poland
Polesie National Park is a protected area in Lublin Voivodeship near Chełm that covers wetlands and peat bogs across roughly 38 square miles (97 square kilometers). The terrain includes numerous karst lakes scattered throughout natural forest complexes.
This area received protection in 1990 to safeguard the rare ecosystems of the Polish part of Polesie. The designation came after decades of efforts by conservationists to preserve these wetland habitats.
The name comes from the historical Polesie region and translates roughly as land of fields. Today you can often see visitors walking the wooden paths with binoculars to watch waterbirds nesting among reeds.
The administration center in Urszulin houses a museum and educational facility along with a wildlife rehabilitation center. Visitors can follow six marked trails that wind through different habitats to observe local species.
Special wooden boardwalks extend far into the swampland and allow access to areas that would otherwise remain submerged. These structures let walkers venture deep into the bogs without getting wet.
