Kazimierz Górski National Stadium, Multi-purpose stadium in Warsaw, Poland
The National Stadium, known in Polish as Stadion Narodowy, is a multi-purpose sports and events venue in Warsaw, built with a retractable roof and about 58,500 seats. The retractable roof allows the arena to be fully enclosed, making it usable in all weather conditions.
The stadium was built on the site of the old 10th-Anniversary Stadium, a postwar structure that had been used as an open-air market for many years before its demolition. The new building opened on November 29, 2011, and served as one of the host venues for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament.
The National Stadium hosts concerts and major international conferences alongside football matches, drawing very different crowds depending on the event. On match days, fans in red and white fill the area around the building, giving the whole district a festive feel.
The stadium sits in the Praga-Południe district on the east bank of the Vistula river, and is easy to reach by commuter train or bus from the city center. It is worth checking in advance what event is taking place, since public access and entry points change depending on the program.
The retractable roof is made of two separate sections that slide over each other like a camera shutter when closing, which allows it to open or close without stopping an event in progress. The inner surface of the roof reflects sound downward, which noticeably changes how noise feels inside the arena when it is shut.
