Rural Architecture Museum of Sanok

Museum der Volksbauweise in Sanok is an open-air museum housing roughly 180 buildings spread across expansive grounds. The structures include farmhouses, residential buildings, and religious structures representing different periods and regions from southeastern Poland and nearby areas.

This museum was established in 1958 and preserves buildings from the 17th century onward. Many structures were relocated from their original villages to protect the building traditions of rural communities in the region.

The buildings on display come from distinct communities like the Boyko and Lemko peoples, each with their own construction methods and ways of living. Walking through the grounds, you notice how rooms were organized and what tools and crafts were part of daily routines.

The grounds are large and require time to explore thoroughly, so plan to spend several hours and wear comfortable walking shoes. Opening hours change between seasons, so check before your visit.

Within the museum grounds stands a reconstructed village square where buildings from different locations were brought together, including a Jewish house. This square gives you a feel for how communities lived side by side in earlier times.
