Tricity, Metropolitan conurbation along Baltic Sea coast in Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland
Tricity is a metropolitan conurbation on the Baltic Sea coast in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, formed by the adjoining urban areas of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot. The three cities share a continuous shoreline promenade and together form an economic and transportation network along Gdańsk Bay.
The construction of the port in Gdynia during the 1920s linked the region economically with the historic Hanseatic city of Gdańsk and the seaside resort of Sopot. After World War Two, the area developed into a cohesive metropolitan zone with shared infrastructure.
The name Trójmiasto reflects the close connection between the three cities, which organize events and festivals together. Visitors experience different cityscapes within a short distance, from Art Nouveau buildings in Sopot to modern harbor architecture in Gdynia.
The SKM commuter rail network connects the three city centers with regular trains running along the coastline. Visitors can explore the entire region using public transport, as bus routes also link the main thoroughfares.
Each of the three cities has its own football team competing in different leagues, creating intense local derbies. Residents often commute between the cities for work while keeping their homes in just one of the three locations.
