Ostróda, Historical urban center in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland
Ostróda is a town in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northern Poland, located on the Drwęca River and the shore of Lake Drweckie. The settlement is surrounded by fifteen lakes altogether, which together form a wide water network.
The settlement received town rights in 1329 after the Teutonic Order built fortifications here from 1270 onwards. Over the centuries the place grew into an important administrative center for the region.
The name of this town derives from the Slavic word „ostrov
The town pier reaches about 50 meters (165 feet) into Lake Drweckie and offers access to several restaurants and rental facilities for water sports equipment. Visitors find here a central starting point for activities on the lake and in the surrounding area.
Nearby runs the Elbląg Canal, where boats are transported over land using special carriages between different water levels. This engineering system allows boats to overcome elevation changes without passing through locks.
