Szczecinek, Medieval city in Zachodniopomorskie, Poland
Szczecinek is a municipality in Szczecinek County, Zachodniopomorskie, spreading around Lake Trzesiecko and along several waterways. The center features Gothic churches, townhouses from different centuries, and a station that links several railway lines.
A Slavic stronghold stood here from the 10th century before Duke Wartislaw IV of Pomerania granted town rights in 1310. After the Second World War, administration shifted from Germany to Poland, and new residents settled the empty houses.
The name comes from a Slavic word meaning luck or shield, reflecting the early roots of the settlement. Visitors today notice the German past in the architecture and street layout, which after 1945 drew Polish residents from different regions.
The station sits centrally and connects routes to Poznań and Kołobrzeg, making arrival from larger cities straightforward. Several green spaces and lakeside paths offer room to walk and rest between sights.
The regional museum has housed collections since 1914 and shows the shift from German Neustettin to the present Polish municipality. Krówka szczecinecka, a local caramel candy, has carried official protection status from the Ministry of Agriculture for some years.
