Zegrze Fortress, Military fortress in Zegrze, Poland.
Zegrze Fortress is a military stronghold in Zegrze, Poland, built on elevated terrain overlooking the Narew River. The complex features two main structures linked by earthwork fortifications that once controlled access along the waterway.
The Russian Empire built Zegrze Fortress between 1892 and 1895 to secure a strategic river crossing. Major upgrades took place from 1902 to 1907, reinforcing its defensive capabilities.
The fortress complex includes seven ammunition depots, multiple barracks in surrounding areas, and a garrison church that served the military community.
The large fortification section is currently owned by the National Bank of Poland and closed to public entry. You can still walk around the exterior to see the overall layout and how it sits above the river.
The fortress was part of a larger network that included two additional forts across the Narew River. This distributed arrangement allowed commanders to monitor and control the entire river section effectively.
