Holy Trinity Church in Opole

The Holy Trinity Church is a Gothic church building in Opole featuring multiple chapels and a northern tower positioned at the corner of the chancel. The structure displays Gothic architectural elements throughout and is constructed from brick, characteristic of medieval Silesian buildings.

Construction of this brick church began in 1287, following the Franciscans' arrival between 1238 and 1241, initiated under Prince Henry the Bearded. This early establishment secured its role as a religious center in Opole's medieval development.

The St. Anna Chapel holds preserved Gothic tombstones belonging to members of the Opole Piasts dynasty, including Princes Bolko, Bolko II, and Bolko III, along with Duchess Anna. These burial monuments reflect the importance this church held for the local ruling family.

The building stands on Zamkowa Street in Opole and is easy to locate. Visitors can explore the entire grounds, including the various chapels and interior spaces, which offer accessible viewing of the architectural details.

Beneath the chancel lies a crypt containing the oldest wall paintings in Silesia, created in the first half of the 14th century. These artworks provide insight into early medieval painting techniques and the spiritual beliefs of the region.
