Market Square in Opole

Market Square in Opole is surrounded by tenement houses with ornate facades and features an Italian-style city hall with a 65-meter (213-foot) tower at its center. Today the buildings around the square house restaurants, shops, and cafes serving both residents and visitors.

The square was laid out in medieval times and has kept its original grid pattern to this day. After suffering major damage during World War II, it was reconstructed while respecting its historical character.

The city hall plays the anthem each day at noon, keeping a local tradition alive for residents and visitors. This daily moment marks how the square remains connected to everyday life.

The square is easy to walk around and offers seating at various restaurants and cafes throughout the space. Most visitors pass through during midday hours, especially around noon when the tower plays its daily song.

The Lion Tenement building at number 1 dates to medieval times and briefly hosted King John Casimir during a royal assembly in 1655. This structure testifies to the square's importance as a political center of the region.
