Cathedral Island, Religious district in Wrocław, Poland

Ancient cobblestone streets lined with religious buildings form this central district, connected to the mainland by multiple stone bridges across the Odra River.

The settlement originated in the 9th century as a fortified island inhabited by the Ślężanie tribe and became the first bishopric center in Lower Silesia in 1000.

The Cathedral of St John the Baptist contains restored silver altars, medieval paintings, and architectural elements representing centuries of religious traditions in Lower Silesia.

Visitors can reach the district using tram lines 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, and 23, with stops at Plac Bema and Katedra stations.

Each evening, a lamplighter maintains a traditional practice by manually igniting the original gas street lamps that illuminate the district's pathways.
